Gold Leaf Initial Letter Illuminations

Sunday, March 17th 11-2PM from 11:00am – 2:00pm

Initial Letters were started in Medieval times with the advancement of illuminated manuscripts. The term illumination comes from the term illuminate, or to fill with light. This effect was achieved with the application of gold leaf to the letter, which reflects light and appears to glow. An Initial, or Drop Cap, is a letter at the beginning of a word, a chapter, or paragraph that is larger, and usually more elaborately designed, than the rest of the text. Based on the medieval method of gilding with metal leaf, this class will have students paint, gild and emboss an initial letter either from a provided template or from their imagination. Some design experience is helpful, but there will be options provided for beginners.

Supplies include all materials needed to make one illumination; watercolor, paintbrushes, water-dishes, blotting material, and prepped watercolor paper. The tools provided during the class project will remain the property of the instructor. Students are highly recommended to bring magnification (reading) glasses if needed.

Class Tuition $35 + $5 Supplies = $40Total Cost – $40

Registration is required, and seating is limited (Max. of 10 students)

Compass Rose Illuminations

Friday, April 5th 2019 6-9PM

The Compass Rose not only showed principal directions on maps but also took part in the invention of the magnetic compass used to navigate the ocean. The variations in design fluctuated through time and place, merging utility and artistry.

In this class, students will create a compass rose based on historical and personal ideas. Using both basic and intermediate examples provided, participants will design their compass, then use a variety of media, including inks, paints and gold and silver composition leaf, to create a one of a kind artwork. This is the next step-up from Introduction to Gold Leaf and Initial Letter Illumination classes with plenty of support for your artistic ideas. Join us in a relaxed and informative atmosphere and take home your own piece of medieval inspired art.

Tools for designing and painting will be available including gold and silver composition leaf, compass drawing tools, inks, watercolor, gouache and embossing tools. Pencils, brushes and blotting material will also be available. The tools provided during the class project will remain the property of the instructor. Students are highly recommended to bring magnification (reading) glasses if needed.

Thoughts from past participants.

Necole’s classes are full of history and fun. Gold leaf is everywhere and I love my finished piece.

I decided to take a Roycroft class and Intro. to Gold Leaf looked interesting. I enjoyed making a piece based on a 13th century Bible dedication page and had can’t wait for more classes.
